Download OctoEdit
The public beta is free to try. Every install starts with a 30-day evaluation of the full product; afterwards OctoEdit keeps working as the free edition for personal and educational use.

Which package is which
- 🧾
Windows
A zip archive: unpack it anywhere and start
OctoEdit.exe. The HTML preview add-on is a separate download that adds the live browser-based preview of HTML and PHP documents; install it from Plugins inside OctoEdit. - 🍎
macOS
A disk image: drag OctoEdit to Applications. Two packages are published that differ in one thing only — with the HTML preview bundles the browser engine for the live HTML preview and is considerably larger; without is the same editor with that one feature left out.
Everything else is identical, and your preferences and saved session live outside the application, so you can switch packages at any time. Details: the HTML preview in the documentation.
System requirements
- 🧾
Windows
Windows 10, version 1809 (build 17763) or later, 64-bit. Needs the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable (x64), which most systems already have.
- 🍎
macOS
macOS 14.4 Sonoma or later on Apple Silicon. Every Mac with an M-series chip is supported; Intel Macs are not.
Verify your download
Every package is listed with its SHA-256 checksum. On Windows run certutil -hashfile OctoEdit-<version>-Windows-x64.zip SHA256, on macOS shasum -a 256 OctoEdit-<version>-macOS-arm64.dmg, and compare the result with the value shown above.
Licensing
OctoEdit is free for personal and educational use and paid for commercial use. See pricing and ordering, or request a free Home licence for your personal, registered copy. The full rules are in the licensing guide.
Older versions and source code
Earlier releases stay available on the releases page. OctoEdit is built with the Qt libraries under the LGPL; the corresponding source code of every Qt version we ship is published on the Qt source archives page, and the full list of third-party components is in the documentation.
